Several years ago, I was writing a small business app when I realized that even though the user interface was painfully straight forward, the user who commissioned me to write this program would probably require a user manual. Really help files. Now even though I have been programming for 15 years, I have never needed to write a windows help file. So I thought “how hard could it be.” After all, I could program in four different languages not including assembly. Writing a windows help file should be a breeze right?… I was beleaguered and shocked when confronted on just how complicated it was. I would have had to learn a whole new language to write a stupid help file. Within five minutes of trying to learn how to make a windows help file I decided to make my own help engine. At first, my help designer program produced help files that looked and behaved like regular help files but this bothered me. Besides my initial lack of creativity my simple Help Designer programs were getting as complicated as the originals. So… I scaled back and left the essentials. As well as made the font really big and really straight forward for both the programmer and the user. If you are anything like me the last thing you want to do is spend weeks writing your help files. My Engine and Designer are simple but powerful and easily intergraded into your projects.
